Beneficial effects of the vegetable juice Aojiru on cellular immunity in Japanese young women

This study was performed to investigate the effect of vegetable juice, Aojiru, on cellular immune functions of healthy young women (n = 19, aged 18-22 yr). They drank 180 mL of Aojiru daily for 4 weeks, and then their blood samples were collected at 2 and 4 weeks after study onset. Aojiru intake had no effect on the proportion of either natural killer cells (NK) or T-lymphocytes in their peripheral blood. There was a positive correlation between NK activity and the proportion of CD16+ CD56+ (NK) cells in their peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). In addition, NK activity per cell increased with prolonged Aojiru intake. Serum interleukin-2 (IL-2) concentration in subjects was significantly higher after 4 week-feeding of Aojiru compared to levels at the onset of this experiment. This result suggests that Aojiru has an ability to enhance NK activity, possibly through the increased production of IL-2. Therefore, it may be a useful supplement to promote health.
