A technical examination of the nutritional and biological components of cow's milk versus human milk, in relation to infant feeding, is presented. Human milk is superior to cow's milk for the infant and also provides protection against infection due to specific antibodies derived from the mother. Human milk also provides all the necessary nutrients, in the correct proportions, to provide for the maintenance, growth, and maturation of an infant to about six months of age. Specific differences in the composition of cow's milk and medical problems that are associated with these differences are discussed.
