An appraisal of the plasticity of alkane profiles of some species of Velloziaceae

Foliar epicuticular waxes of a variable number of individuals of 12 species of Velloziaceae were analysed. The specimens were collected at different altitudes and at different times of the year. Three degrees of plasticity of alkane profiles were recognized, depending on the species considered. For most taxa, alkanes may be taxonomically useful at the species level if some precautions are taken. intraspecific variation is not influenced by site and time of collection. Differences in alkane profiles among individuals of Vellozia hirsuta are not random, but follow the regular patterns of polymorphism and are correlated with morphoanatomic types.
