Sterols of 16 mosses were analysed by GLC and GC-MS. Cholest-5-en-3 beta-ol,24-methylchloesta-5,22-dien-3 beta-ol, 24-methylcholest-5-en-3 beta-ol,24-ethylcholesta-5,22-dien-3 beta-ol,24-ethylcholest-5-en-3 beta-ol, were detected in all samples but there were differences in the relative amounts present. The C29-sterols were predominant constituents in most of the mosses examined.
