Vitamin D and calcium hormones in pregnancy

Pregnancy causes tremendous shifts in maternal calcium metabolism in order to supply enough calcium for fetal bone mineralization and lactation. Calcium accumulation begins during early pregnancy; hormonal control of calcium metabolism may be related to vitamin D. Serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D rise throughout pregnancy, facilitating increased intestinal calcium absorption. The stimulus for active biosynthesis of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D may be factors other than parathyroid hormone, such as progesterone, estrogens, and human placental lactogen. High levels of calcitonin in the pregnant woman may increase calcium storage in the maternal skeleton. Evidence concerning these interactions of hormones, vitamins, bone and calcium during pregnancy may lead to an understanding of human bone disorders.
