Nutrition intervention in the community--the "WIC" program
1980
Berkenfield, Janet | Schwartz, Janet B.
Recognition of the crucial role nutrition has in the health of young children and pregnant women has led to the creation of the Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). The program provides supplemental foods and individualized nutritional counselling to pregnant and postpartum women, nursing mothers, and young children considered to be at risk. Participants receive supplemental food each month as well as food vouchers. The program attempts to integrate its services with the patients' routine health care. Nutritionists and nutrition aides work with families on such areas as meal planning and diet improvement. Given its effectiveness, local health care personnel should regard the program as a means of improving the health of low-income mothers and children.
