SY 5-3: Nestle's efforts towards sustainable agriculture and SAI, the sustainable agriculture initiative of the International Food Industry
2004
Johr, H.
Food products of high quality and safety are primary objectives for Nestle since the Company was founded in 1866. Agricultural raw materials are the key ingredients for both quality and safety. Their production conditions, with respect to the farming community, the environment, animals, and best-adapted production technologies, are crucial to achieve these objectives on a long-term basis. While differing consumer preferences have to be respected world-wide to gain continuing demand for our products, we also need a sustainable supply of raw materials. We therefore encourage sustainable development in agriculture and support it. We provide, as far as feasible, technical assistance to producers and to farmers and analyze how sustainable the applied production methods are. Nestle supplies a wide range of raw materials for which Nestle, together with Group Danone and Unilever, has created the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative [SAI] of the International Food Industry. The first objective of SAI is to catalyze sustainable development in agriculture, in general; to create awareness, share knowledge, and encourage participating member companies to promote sustainable agriculture. SAI invites all interested food companies to participate in the Initiative. It searches the dialogue with all relevant stakeholders to include their views as far as they contribute to the objective and to obtain the best means of tracing and monitoring throughout the supply chain.
