High prevalence of diabetes in young Pima Indians. Evidence of phenotypic variation in a genetically isolated population

Recent research has indicated that asymptomatic hyperglycemia occurs in children and young adults as well as the elderly, but the condition has not been picked up readily. Pima Indians, who as a race have a high incidence of diabetes and obesity, were studied for the connection between heredity and glucose intolerance. Significant correlations between body mass and cholesterol levels and glucose intolerance were made. Glucose tolerance in 15-24 year-old offspring of two diabetic parents was significantly higher than offspring of nondiabetic parents. Offspring in the 5-14 year-old bracket with diabetic parents and offspring in either age bracket with one diabetic parent show no different glucose tolerance than offspring of nondiabetic parents. The hypothesis is supported that diabetes in the Pima population is of a particular variety which occurs more frequently and at an earlier age.
