EPA allows cancer risk to help producer groups
1989
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) used the negligible risk standard in deciding to allow continued use of captan, a fungicide used on 24 fruits and vegetables. Critics say that the EPA review process fails to consider the synergistic effects of chemicals, the cumulative effects over time or the eating habits of certain groups of consumers who may consume more than the average amount of fruits and vegetables.
