Rhizomal perennial peanut in the urban landscape

With water management districts encouraging Florida's counties to implement year-round water restrictions and water a precious resource in Florida due to rapid urbanization, perennial peanut is showing its value. Perennial peanut (Arachis glabrata) has recently shown promise as an ornamental ground cover in home landscapes, road medians, parking lot islands, landscape berms, and canal banks due to its high resistance to drought, nematodes, pathogens and its lack of supplemental fertilization to remain green. This translates into savings in energy, dollars, and impacts to the environment. Perennial peanut provides year-round color in USDA zones 10 through 11 and can provide an alternative to turf or mulched areas in water-wise landscapes.
