Cross-reactivity is often seen as a drawback in the use of immunoassay for environmental analysis. We consider here the problem of identifying and quantitating single compounds and mixtures from within a large class of cross-reacting analyses, combining work by earlier authors on pattern recognition and mixture analysis. Careful choice of antibodies together with appropriate statistical analysis has the potential not only to overcome the cross-reactivity problem but to turn it into an advantage.
