Management of brinjal shoot and fruit borer, leucinodes orbonalis guenee through net house cultivation

An experiment was conducted at the Vegetable Research Farm, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, India during the year 2001 with the aim to reduce the insecticide usage on brinjal crop against brinjal shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee. For this purpose, six cultivars brinjal were transplanted under net house and field conditions. Fruit damage by L. orbonalis and its management practices were compared and performance of cultivars was evaluated under both the conditions. Net house planted crop with clean cultivation, mechanical control (Clipping of L. orbonalis infested shoots and destruction of borer damaged fruits at regular intervals), neem products and without any insecticidal spray for the control of L. orbonalis, resulted in significantly lower fruit damage (28.29 %) as compared to the field conditions (55.08%) even after following an alternate spray schedule of recommended insecticides. Fruit damage in net house was nearly 50% lower than the fruit damage recorded under field condition. Moreover, cultivars BH-1, BH-2 and Punjab Barsati resulted in significantly higher marketable fruit yield ( 554.66-579.66 g/plant) and total fruit yield ( 729.00-779.33 g/plant) in net house in comparison to 82.00-194.66 g/plant marketable and 179.00-362.00 g/plant total fruit yields in field conditions.
