The kiwifruit (Chinese gooseberry, Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev) Liang et Ferguson) introduced from New Zealand has been grown commercially since the early 1980s and is currently cultivated on 1,500 ha in Korea. It is mainly cultivated in southern coastal areas of Korea where winters are generally warm. However, vines are frequrntly damaged by cold during the winter season. Several diseases have also been reported on kiwifruit following an increase in cultivated acreage during the past two decades. The following diseases have been reported on kiwifruit grown in Korea: bacterial canker, blossom blight, fruit rot, stem canker, gray mold, anthracnose, Nectria canker, leaf blight, brown leaf spot, brown felt, and root-knot nematode. Among the diseases, bacterial canker, blossom blight, and fruit rot are considered as the major diseases on kiwifruit and cause serious economic losses during cultivation and storage. The current status of occurrence of major diseases on kiwifruits and their control in Korea are discussed in this report.
