In this study, a quasi-experimental research design was used to determine effectiveness of videotaped instruction compared with conventional instruction. The experimental group received videotaped instruction, and the control group received conventional instruction by a clinical dietitian. Twenty-four patients admitted to a private 273-bed acute-care hospital served as volunteers. All subjects had diabetes mellitus and were alternately assigned to the two groups on the basis of the order in which they were admitted to the hospital.
