Safety evaluation of the food ingredients called GRAS
1978
Irving, George W. Jr
The program under the aegis of FDA to examine and evaluate food ingredients classed as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) is described. A group of qualified scientists designated as the Select Committee on GRAS Substances (SCOGS) was assigned the task of analyzing all relevant scientific data and offering an opinion as to the hazardous potential of food ingredients. FDA utilizes SCOGS recommendations in making regulatory decisions. FDA has proposed regulatory action on 60 GRAS substances and taken final regulatory action on 28 others.
