The use of essential oils applied as fumigants to control mycotoxigenic fungi affecting stored grain
1993
Paster, N.
The efficacy of essential oils extracted from aromatic plants grown in Israel in controlling moulds attacking stored grain was studied. Essential oils extracted from oregano and applied as fumigants inhibited the growth of mycelia and spore germination of the three fungi tested: Aspergillus flavus, A. ochraceus and A. niger. The findings emphasize the fumigant toxicity of oregano and thyme essential oils against fungi attacking stored grain. The application of these natural products should therefore be considered as an alternative to the chemicals which are currently used as grain preservatives.
