Relationships between resting energy expenditure and lean body mass in Italian population

The aim of this work was to compare fat free mass (FFM) obtained by anthropometry (SF), Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) and Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) methods in a group of male and to evaluate the relationship between the lean compartment and Resting Energy Expenditure (REE). The study population was composed of 30 male subjects aged 20-43 (26 +- 5) years and with a Body Mass Index (DMI) between 19-30 (23.7 +- 2.7) kg/square m. The comparison between the methods is presented using the approach developed by Bland and Altman, by plotting the differences between two measurements of a given subject against the mean. There were significant mean differences between each pair of methods and appreciable variances of those means. Results of simple linear regression between REE and FFM obtained by DXA, skinfolds and BIA were respectively r**2 = 0.38, r**2 = 0.42 and r**2 = 0.37, with P0.001. Variability of REE is better explained by total body weight, while the relation between REE and FFM obtained by DXA, BIA and SF was quite similar

Questo lavoro ha confrontato la massa magra (FFM) ottenuta mediante antropoplicometria, BIA (Bioelectrical lmpedance Analysis) e DXA (Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry) in un gruppo di soggetti sani, normopeso, di sesso maschile e si è proposto di verificare la relazione tra la FFM e il dispendio energetico giornaliero a riposo (REE). Sono stati studiati 30 soggetti di età compresa tra 20 e 43 (26 +- 5) anni e con un indice di massa corporea compreso tra 19-30 (23,7 +- 2,7) kg/metro quadrato. La FFM ottenuta dalle 3 metodiche applicate è stata confrontata seguendo l'approccio sviluppato da Bland e Altman. E' stata evidenziata una significativa differenza tra ogni coppia di metodi confrontati, mentre la regressione lineare tra l'REE e la FFM ha evidenziato un coefficiente di correlazione per DXA, plicometria e BIA rispettivamente di r**2 = 0,38, r**2 = 0,37 e r**2 = 0,42, con P0,001. Il peso corporeo è risultato il parametro meglio correlato con il REE, mentre la correlazione tra il REE e la FFM misurata con le diverse metodiche utilizzate non presenta differenze significative
