Cover materials for winter protection of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon x transvaalensis Burtt. Davy) turf

English. The species used for turf establishment in Italy are usually cool-season grasses such as Poa pratensis, Lolium perenne and Festuca arundinacea. Nevertheless, given the typically Mediterranean climate, warm-season turfgrasses such as Cynodon dactylon, Paspalum vaginatum or Zoysia spp. would be better suited. The main issue related to the use of these species is their browning after the first Autumn frost. One of the solutions to this problem is overseeding these warm-season species with a cool-season grass. For high profile sports turfgrasses, protective covers could be a viable alternative. This research was carried out in Pisa between November 2002 and June 2003 and focused on the comparison between holed sheets of low density polyethylene (LPDE), transparent (EVA I) and red (EVA R) ethylene vinyl-acetate and nonwoven polyester (TNT) on a hybrid Bermuda grass turf (Cynodon dactylon x transvaalensis Burtt. Davy cv Santa Ana). The results showed that protective covers do not prevent discoloration of turfgrass, but some materials, such as EVA and WPE, contribute to a slower onset of dormancy on Bermuda grass. Another result determined by the use of these protective covers has been a faster green up process by about 20 days, thus obtaining a green turf surface more rapidly
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. Nei tappeti erbosi italiani sono utilizzate specie quali Poa pratensis, Lolium perenne e Festuca arundinacea. Più adatte al nostro clima sono le macroterme Cynodon dactylon, Paspalum vaginatum o Zoysia spp. Il limite di queste ultime è il disseccamento fogliare invernale. Una soluzione è la loro trasemina con specie microterme. In impianti sportivi di elevato livello, si potrebbe proteggere il tappeto erboso con materiali di copertura sintetici. Nella ricerca sono stati confrontati film di LDPE, EVA e poliestere tessuto non tessuto su gramigna Santa Ana. Le protezioni non hanno evitato la perdita di colore del tappeto erboso, ma alcune hanno consentito una più graduale entrata in dormienza, un anticipo della ripresa vegetativa di circa 20 giorni e un più rapido rinverdimento della superficie.
