Breeding progress measured in eight elite inbred families [Zea mays L.; maize; Iowa]

English. United States grain yields for maize, Zea mays L., have increased over the last 75 years. Numerous studies have demonstrated the contribution of plant breeding and genetics to the total maize grain yield gains. A goal of maize breeders is to ensure that sufficient genetic variation exists for continued genetic gain for grain yield and key agronomic traits of importance to the maize producer. The objective of this study was to measure progress across multiple cycles of selection for grain yield and various agronomic traits for key Pioneer inbred lines developed from 1983 to 1987. Eight important, commercially used Pioneer inbred lines, three from Stiff Stalk (SS) and 5 from Non-Stiff Stalk (NSS) genetic backgrounds, their parents and ten selected lines from both first cycle and second cycle recoveries from these key lines were crossed to an appropriate inbred tester. Each set of 23 hybrids representing each of the eight key Pioneer inbred lines was targeted for evaluation at ten locations for two years. Grain yield, harvest grain moisture, test weight, plant and ear height, stay green and stalk lodging were measured. Changes in performance for these traits were evaluated over cycles of selection to determine the effectiveness of breeding on improving trait performance. The level of change varied with inbred, trait and cycle of selection, however on average results indicated that grain yield increased and changes in other traits over the generations were identified
