A survey on the state of subsurface pipe drainage in a reclamation basin of Southern Friuli Venezia Giulia (Consorzio di Bonifica Bassa Friulana) has been carried out with the aim of evaluating the diffusion and the technical traits of the plants, and the interactions between pipe drainage systems and the management of the whole basin. Roughly 1,400 ha of drained soils were counted, mainly gathered in the Southern belt of the territory; on the average, pipe drainage systems were installed in large farms (100 ha in surface area), where cash crops are cultivated. Pipe drainage systems were realized in a wide range of soil types; as far as soil texture is concerned, pipe drain systems were recognized to be installed also in unsuitable soils (e.g., peaty). Design criteria (e.g., drain spacing, diameter and depth) appeared to be poorly correlated with the physical and hydrological traits of the soils. Farmers resulted quite satisfied of drainage performance; particularly, they appreciated the positive indirect effect on weed control. However, few failures were pointed out, mainly on drainage systems installed in heavy and peaty soils
