The Authors have evaluated six horses before and after 1800 meters of gallopping with submaximal force, blood cells count by automated cell counter, serum concentrations of lactate, NEFA, glycaemia, iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), latent iron binding capacity (LIBC), percent of transferrin saturation by spectrophotometric methods and ferritin by RIA method to assess if exercise could induce chronic depauperation of iron storage. We didn't consider our serum ferritin values because of their unreliability. Serum iron concentrations didn't increase after exercise but LIBC and percent of transferrin saturation had a constant relation with increase or decrease of haemoglobin concentration
