Pollination of sweet pepper in greenhouses by Bombus terrestris (L.) and Apis mellifera L. [Piedmont]

During 1993 and 1994, researches on the pollination of sweet pepper by Bombus terrestris (L.) and Apis mellifera L. were carried out in greenhouses sited in two different areas of the Cuneo district (Italy). Both honeybees and bumblebees were observed visiting the flowers, but the latters proved to be more suitable in the confined environment of the greenhouses. The attractiveness of the four cultivars examined - "Quadrato di Cuneo", "Quadrato d'Asti", "Pathos", and "Corno di bue" - greatly varied: the first three were visited more than the other. The fruits produced on caged plants, expecially of the cv. "Quadrato di Cuneo" and "Quadrato d'Asti", were less numerous, smaller and with fewer seed than those produced by the plants that were freely pollinated by the insects

Nel biennio 1993-1994, indagini sull'impiego di Bombus terrestris (L.) e Apis mellifera L. nell'impollinazione del peperone in coltura protetta sono state svolte in due localita' della provincia di Cuneo. Sia le api che i bombi sono stati osservati in attivita' sui fiori, ma i secondi si sono dimostrati piu' efficaci nell'ambiente confinato dei tunnel. Le quattro varieta' prese in esame ("Quadrato di Cuneo", "Quadrato d'Asti", "Pathos" e "Corno di bue") sono risultate variamente attrattive per i pronubi: le prime tre sono state visitate molto piu' assiduamente dell'altra. I frutti prodotti su piante isolate, specialmente nel caso delle varieta' "Quadrato di Cuneo" e "Quadrato d'Asti", erano meno numerosi, piu' piccoli e meno ricchi di semi di quelli prodotti su piante lasciate alla libera azione impollinatrice degli insetti
