Intestinal protozoa in calves of the province of Cuneo [Piedmont]

English. The AA have studied the intestinal parasitic protozoa of calves (aged from 1 to 90 days) from herds in the province of Cuneo (Piedmont). Protozoa were detected in 142 out of 263 examined animals (total prevalence 54%). Nine species of protozoa were found; in order of prevalence, they are: Giardia bovis (20.9%), Cryptosporidium parvum (19.4%), Entamoeba bovis (18.6%), Eimeria ellipsoidalis (4.9%), E. bovis (3.4%), E. subspherica (2.3%), E. zuernii (1.9%), E. cylindrica (1.1%), Tritrichomonas enteris (0.4%); mixed infections were observed in 35 calves (13.3%). Some epidemiological considerations have been reported. E. subspherica and T. enteris were recognized for the first time in Italy

Sono stati riscontrati protozoi in 142 animali sui 263 esaminati (prevalenza totale del 54%). Sono state riscontrate nove specie di protozoi; in ordine di prevalenza, esse sono: Giardia bovis (20.9%), Cryptosporidium parvum (19.4%), Entamoeba bovis (18.6%), Eimeria ellipsoidalis (4.9%), E. bovis (3.4%), E. suspherica (2.3%), E. zuernii (1.9%), E. cylindrica (1.1%), Tritrichomonas enteris (0.4%); sono state riscontrate infezioni miste in 35 vitelli (13.3%).
