Effect of rbST treatment of dairy cows on pattern of changes of some hormones [recombinant bovine somatotropin]

English. Six dairy cows in late lactation were divided in 2 homogeneous groups of 3 cows each; 3 of them received 2 injections, every 28 days, of 640 mg of rbST in a slow release formulation. Blood samples were withdrown on 0, 2, 5, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23 and 27 days from each treatment, and on 5th and 27th day at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 hour after the morning meal. GH, insulin, glucagon, T3, T4 and rT3 were determined on blood plasma. The treatment caused a curvilinear increase of GH, as well as of insulin, while glucagone slightly decreased. However, the metabolic and yield effects seem to be attributable only to very high GH levels; in fact, these effects tend to decrease or to disappear when GH is still maintained 5 times higher then in control cows

[Sei vacche da latte al termine della lattazione sono state divise in due gruppi omogenei di 3 vacche ciascuno; a 3 di queste sono stati iniettati, ogni 28 giorni, 640 mg di rbST in una formulazione a lento rilascio. Sono stati prelevati campioni di sangue a 0, 2, 5, 6, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23 e 27 giorni da ogni trattamento e, al quinto e ventisettesimo giorno, a 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 e 24 ore dopo il pasto mattutino. Sul sangue venivano determinati GH, insulina, glucagone, T3, T4 e rT3. Il trattamento determinava un incremento curvilineo di GH e insulina, mentre il glucagone diminuiva leggermente. Comunque, gli effetti metabolici e produttivi sembrano da attribuire solamente a livelli molto elevati di GH, dato che gli stessi tendono a diminuire o a sparire quando il GH e' ancora a livelli superiori a 5 volte rispetto a quello delle vacche di controllo]
