A survey on soilless cultivation systems in Apulia region [vegetable and ornamental crops]

English. In Apulia region (Southern Italy), an investigation on soilless cultivation was carried out in 1998-1999. The total surface is 40 ha, mainly located in the provinces of Bari and Lecce and especially in the areas of Terlizzi, Taviano and Leverano, known for their greenhouses. The soilless cultivation techniques employed were mainly open system methods based on the use of substrate both for cut flowers and vegetables or ornamental plants in pots. A great variety of substrates and installations was recorded. The introduction and diffusion of new techniques are generally connected to soilborne disease problems and are characterized by large freedom of the entrepreneur in the choice of systems and materials, as well as in crop management. We describe the essential technical features of the implemented installations and their management, as well as the underlying reasons for the choice, the aptitude and the expectations of farmers towards the introduction of such an innovation in their farms
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. Durante il periodo 1998-1999 in Puglia e' stata condotta un'indagine sulla coltivazione senza suolo. La superficie complessiva risulta di circa 40 ha, prevalentemente distribuiti nelle province di Bari e Lecce, nei comprensori tipicamente serricoli di Terlizzi, Taviano e Leverano. Le coltivazioni senza suolo individuate consistono in sistemi a ciclo aperto su substrato, relative a specie da fiore reciso, orticole e ornamentali in vaso, con un'ampia variabilita' di substrati ed impianti. L'introduzione e la diffusione delle nuove tecniche sono generalmente legate a problemi di stanchezza del terreno e sono caratterizzate da ampia autonomia imprenditoriale sia nelle scelte dei sistemi e dei materiali, sia nella gestione delle coltivazioni. Sono descritte le principali caratteristiche tecniche degli impianti realizzati e la relativa gestione, nonche' le motivazioni, l'atteggiamento e le previsioni degli imprenditori nei confronti dell'introduzione di queste innovazioni nelle loro aziende
