Hand-raising and reintroduction technique of young Montagu's harrier (Cyrcus pygarcus) to avoid behavioural abnormalities

During Summer 1998 and 1999 three groups of young Montagu's harriers, two weeks old, have been hand raised using three different technique i.e. hacking box in an aviary, hacking box in open field and hand raising of young raptors in a normal cage. The first two techniques avoided contact between humans and raptors using an artificial mother to feed young birds. Behavioural patterns of the three groups have been recorded by direct observation of young birds in captivity and after releasing in the wild and compared to those of 15 wild young Montagu's harriers born in the same area. Results point out that only birds hand raised avoiding any contact with humans reach the best fitness and do not develop any behavioural abnormalities

La prova era distinta in fasi caratterizzate dall'utilizzo di diversi hack-box. L'alimentazione era fornita con un modello artificiale della femmina conspecifica, impiegato manualmente nella prima fase e controllato a distanza nella seconda fase. Il terzo gruppo (di controllo) era allevato convenzionalmente. Nel presente lavoro e' comparato il comportamento dei soggetti allevati convenzionalmente con quello dei soggetti allevati tramite hacking modificato e con 15 soggetti selvatici coetanei cresciuti a vita libera
