Neodryinus typhlocybae (Ashmead). Use and efficacy in biological control [parasitoid of Metcalfa pruinosa]

English. The natural paleartic enemies did not prevent the outbreaks of Metcalfa pruinosa in Europe. Biological control was satisfactorily provided by Neodryinus typhlocybae, which was collected in United States (Connecticut) and introduced in Italy (Veneto) in 1989. The dryinid wasp widespread in Veneto region and now M. pruinosa is no more an economic problem. N. typhlocybae needs some years after introduction before the increase of population is sufficient to control M. pruinosa. N. typhlocybae overwinters as mature larva inside a cocoon on leaves fallen on the ground. The species completes one or two generations per year and the first adults emerge in June, when M. pruinosa reaches the third and fourth juvenile stages. Sex allocation and diapause induction are related with the age of the host: only males emerge from the parasitized third stage, both males and females can develop on fourth stage, but males will be monovoltine and females bivoltine; on fifth instars mostly monovoltine females are produced. A single female of N. typhlocybae can parasitize 60 nymphs and can eat about 50 young stages of M. pruinosa, therefore a female can potentially destroy the offspring of 1-2 females of this planthopper
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. Insufficiente si e' dimostrata l'azione di contenimento di M. pruinosa condotta dagli antagonisti naturali autoctoni. Efficace, anche se inizialmente lento, si e' rivelato il predatore e parassitoide Neodryinus typhlocybae (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Dryinidae) nelle aree di prima liberazione (Veneto). La specie e' stata in seguito introdotta, con introduzioni puntiformi, in quasi tutte le regioni dove il flatide rappresenta un problema. Il driinide presenta una o due generazioni all'anno; i primi adulti compaiono in giugno, piu' o meno in corrispondenza della comparsa delle prime ninfe di IV eta' di M. pruinosa. Il sesso e l'entrata in diapausa sono legati all'eta' dell'ospite parassitizzato. La fecondita' e la capacita' predatoria di una femmina di N. typhlocybae e' tale da poter potenzialmente eliminare la prole di 4-6 femmine di M. pruinosa. Stime quantitative della popolazione di N. typhlocybae, nelle zone di prima liberazione, indicano presenze dell'ordine del milione di individui per ettaro. Tali risultati si ottengono a distanza di almeno 5-6 anni dall'introduzione. Data la lentezza iniziale di azione e il continuo espandersi di M. pruinosa, sarebbe opportuno procedere all'ulteriore diffusione del parassitoide
