A new rice cultivar "Hinohikari" was bred from pedigrees of the cross ("Aichi No.40", "Koganebare"/"Koshihikari") at the Miyazaki Agricultural Experiment Station. This cross was made in 1979. F1, F2 and F3 of the progeny were generated in a green house. F4 individuals were initially selected in the field. F4 panicle lines were selected according to the brightness of the boiled rice. The strains after F6 were repeatedly selected using the pedigree method. The pedigree was registered in the official list of rice cultivars as "Norin No.299" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1989, and has been recommended in Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefecture since 1989. "Hinohikari" belongs to the medium maturity group of non-glutinous cultivars. The culm length is 3-5cm shorter than "Koganemasari", and the panicle number is somewhat higher. "Hinohikari" belongs to the rather long stature and rather panicle weight type. It is a delicious cultivar of rice like "Koshihikari", "Hinohikari" is the first cultivar of its quality to be bred in Kyushu. The lodging resistance and yielding ability were similar to "Koganemasari". Also the resistances to blast disease and bacterial leaf blight disease were rather weak, and similar to "Koganebare". In spite of this, it is predicted that "Hinohikari" will be able to grow well in western Japan
