Studies on the mechanism of water retention and transport for different size classes of the aggregate-like soil "Akadama"

The available water capacity in aggregate-like bodies of "Akadama" was 0.14 in average volume fraction of liquid, which was considerably lower than that of Angyou topsoil (humic volcanic ash). The soil water retention curve of "Akadama" showed a form similar to that of Toyoura standard sand for concrete test pieces. That is, the aggregate-body water-holding capacity was inferior to that of Angyou topsoil. Evaporation experiments in the aggregate-like bodies showed that first-stage drying is concluded within 16 days for 2-5mm particles size, and within 15 days for both 5-10 and 10-20 mm. The second "reducing evaporation rate" stage then follows. Thus, the dependence of particle size on both soil water retentivity and conductivity was not overly large
