In this paper, we have explored the labyrinth of regulations governing the agrimonetary system of the European communities. Their complicated linkage is revealed through our study of the Official Journal and other official publications from 1962 to 1992. The following three types of regulations are surveyed; (a) exchange rates applied for the purposes of the common agricultural policy (CAP), (b) monetary compensatory amounts (MCAs), (c) conversion rates applied in agriculture. Section 1 briefly outlines the system under the CAP. The other four sections of the paper deal with the legal history which can be divided into : the system under the stable exchange rates : the system in the first stage of float exchange : European Monetary System and the agrimonetary system : unity of internal market-abolition of MCAs. Throughout the paper, the legal aspect of the system was the main focus. Much attention should be paid to the political issues for further research
