Successional spectral patterns of ezo spruce (Picea jezoensis (Carr.)) and akaezo spruce (Picea glehnii Mast.) were analyzed during the four seasons using Landsat Thematic Mapper imagery. The changing patterns of digital numbers (DN) against stand ages varied in each channel due to different vegetation conditions; however, there two patterns appeared. One was the DN decreasing clearly until about 30 years of age, and the other was the DN keeping almost the same intensity through all ages. Intensity differences of DN, which existed between spruce and broadleaved trees in spruce stands or on the forest floor as the back ground of tree canopies, had much influence on the spectral patterns. It was found that an exponential function expressed the relationship between stand age and DN very well almost through out the four seasons
