Wood characteristics in plus-tree clones of sugi [Cryptomeria japonica] planted in southern Hokkaido [Japan], 1
1999
Akutsu, H. (Hokkaido. Forest Products Research Inst., Asahikawa (Japan))
Studies were made on various wood characteristics, i. e. moisture content, grain-angle, ring analysis by soft X-ray densitometry and color of heartwood, of 22 plus-tree clones of Cryptomeria japonica D. don Planted in The Hokkaido Forest Research Institute Donan Branch Station in Hakodate. The sampled stand was established in 1977. The results of the studies are summarized as follows. 1) The results of analysis of variance, these characteristics had a significance level of 1 % among the clones. 2) Overall average of moisture content of heartwood was 74.3 %. This value was smaller than that of clones in other districts. Moisture content of heartwood was under 100 % except for two clones. 3) Ring analysis was performed on 3-6 of outer annual rings. The overall average was 0.29 g/cm3 (ring width: 8.0 mm). Three clones had the biggest density of 0.32 g/cm3. 4) Grain-angle was smaller than that of other kinds of planted conifers. Three clones from the Aomori district (Hirosaki 1, 4 and Higashitsugaru 1) had the smallest values (Av. 1 to 2 %, max. 3 to 4 %) among the clones. 5) The color of the heartwood was red or light red except for two clones. Shinjyou 1 and Nishitsugaru 4 had a reddish-brown color
