To develop a nondestructive measurement method of sugar (Brix) of intact satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.), the near infrared (NIR) method was evaluated. 1) The satsuma mandarin which were used in '90, '91, '92 were 7 early maturing strains and 4 common strains. 2) The reflectance spectra and Brix of satsuma mandarin in '90, '91, '92 were measured. And both data were entered to IBM computer 5530 with Infralyzer 500, and Multiple regression equations for Brix and spectra were calculated. And Multiple Regression coefficient Cofactor (MCC), Standard Estimation of Error (SEE), and Standard Estimation of Prediction (SEP) with each equations were obtained. 3) Higher MCC and smaller SEp were obtained in the calibration equations for Brix which were calculated with early maturing strains and the accuracy were lower with common strains in 3 years ('90, '91, '92). 4) The calibration equations with one years early maturing stains could not be adapted for other years samples. However by using the wavelengths which were selected in calibration equation with satsuma mandarin juice, the accuracy were improved. 5) The SEP of equation with manual selected wavelengths for '90, '91, '92 samples were 1.15, 0.926, 0.803 respectively. And correlation cofacter (CC) were 0.603, 0.520, 0.518
