"LS16" and "LS17" are breeding lines of high yielding Chinese yam (D. opposita Thunb.), which are the clonal lines selected by rhizophore weight and shape from about one hundred thousands plants of local variety, "Tanba-yamanoimo". Both of the rhizophore weight were about 40% heavier than local variety, "Tanba-yamanoimo" under the field condition with a good globular shape. They were heavier than the other seven local varieties, too. Especially, LS16 had the most regular shape for the rhizophore than the others. Also, the high productivity was observed under the green house condition. It was shown that the local variety, "Tanba-yamanoimo" was the heterogeneous population which included genetically low yielding plants. It was concluded that the single plant selection from them was effective
