Formation and function of a farmland preservation corporation: A case study of a northern rice producing area in Hokkaido [Japan]

Individual farmers were the main force in developing Hokkaido agericulture. With the aging of farmers and the lack of successors the problem of how to deal with abandoned farmland has become a big issue. One solution is to have organizations engage in the preservation and maintenance of farmland in place individual farmers. This is a case study of a farmland preservation corporation that takes care of abandoned farmland. The results of the study show that a corporation created from existing organizations can a management body of abandoned farmlands*. It can be said that cooperative/group management is one of the possible ways to maintain agriculture and preserve farmland.
