summary Human being is one of the external environment for calves. What is it on earth for calves with human being ? So, research was done with the purpose of examining differences in the behaviour of the calves which toward a human, objects and for themselves . Four Holstein calves born on Niigata university farm ( male3, female 1 ) were observed for two weeks from their birth. A observer (author) sat down on the entrance of calf hutch, and behaviour of calves were recorded. Smelling, contact with nose. licking, and rubbing were seen as behaviour toward human. These were almost common to the behaviour toward objects. So, the frequency and the pattern of appearances of behaviour toward both the observer and objects were examined. Calves showed much behaviour in one week after birth toward the observer, the objects and for themselves. There were about many two times of behaviour to the object in the behavior toward a human. There was much contact with nose toward the observer than objects, however there was much behaviour of smelling toward objects than observer. And, the appearance pattern of rubbing to the observer was different from it toward objects. Calves found out that object was distinguished from the human in one week after birth. And, it found out calves to show different behavior toward both, too. In other words, a human being is "something that it is not a object" for the calves.
