Summary This study clarifies the outline of farming styles, the key elements of management and characterizes 4 villages of minority groups in mountainous karst areas in south-western China- Although main farm income has been based on livestock, the amounts are extremely low, so many households tend to rely on non-farm income. Main crops are corn, soybean, and sweet potato for the self-efficient. Crops bought through markets have been increased, and they tend to be taking the place of self-supplied crops. Production of market crops, for instance, vegetable, banana, and grape would be one of the orientations for the village's future. As the farming conditions and the significance of farming are relatively different between the villages, it need the way that can make the most of differences on the economic exploitations .
