Hydrological characteristics during cold season in a snowy mountain basin

Abstract In this study, hydrological characteristics during the cold season (December-May) are examined and discussed using the observed data of an experimental watershed (A=19.45 square km located in a snowy basin. Analysis of time series of hydrological data show that time series data of flow and water temperature during snowmelt season contain a periodic component of about 24 hours, and daily flows during the cold season have much more persistence than that during the warm season. It is understood that flow during snowmelt season is generated by a combination of groundwater having recession constant 0.018d sup(-1) and diurnal flow having recession constant 0.015h sup(-1). It is also shown that the different snow environment has an effect on the quantity of snow water equivalent just before the beginning of the snowmelt season, and the ratio of total discharge during snowmelt season to annual discharge is about 40% in 2001 and 2002.
