Characteristics of Feline calicivirus (FCV) detected by RT-PCR using new designated primers

As a result of RT-PCR using two newly designated primer sets (8F/8R and AO-S/AO-A) to detect Feline calicivirus (FCV) field 8 isolates which was not possible by a method of Sykes et al. (2001), it showed a rate of detection of 100%. Of 8 strains genogroups GAI and II were 12.5 and 87.5% respectively. The GA II presented a geographical relationship. In addition, there is high detectable rate of 3/15 (20%) in the vaccine break down strains. It seems that the new primers were useful in diagnosis and defense of FCV by vaccination. On the physicochemical properties, temperature resistant strain was not shown, and two pH resistant strains were detected. r-FeIFN susceptibility (LogPPD50) presented rather wide range of 1.2-3.4. By comparison with an amino acid sequence (364-586) of strains detected by a method of Sykes et al. (2001) the remarkable difference was seen in neither, but a remarkable change was recognized in 5'HVR and 3'HVR.
