Damping-off of carrot caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG-1 I C

Damping-off of carrots was observed in Hokkaido, Japan in May 2011. An isolate obtained from diseased tissues was identified as Rhizoctonia solani anastomosis group (AG)-1 I C on the basis of cultural appearance, mycelial growth temperature, hyphal anastomosis and the result of specific PCR analysis. The AG-1 I C isolate caused damping-off in carrot seedlings, but did not induce root rot in carrots in inoculation tests. The reference isolate NCRR1 (R. solani AG-2-2 IV) known, as the carrot root rot pathogen, caused damping-off and root rot in carrots. We confirmed that the AG-1 I C isolate differed from the AG-2-2 IV isolate in terms of pathogenicity in carrot roots. Damping-off of carrot caused by R. solani AG-1 I C has not been reported in Japan; therefore, we hereby propose including it as one of the pathogens of the disease.
