About 32 % of the forest area in Paraguay has disappeared in the past 20 years. Although the government has been working on conservation and enhancement of forest resources, it cannot stop the reduction of forest area due to an increase in wood demand. Under these circumstances, in promoting a broad-based reforestation plan, reforestation by farmers is expected to improve farmers' livelihoods. However, existing wood distribution and the profitability of farm forestry are unclear. Therefore, this paper intends to reveal the current wood distribution structure and wood consumption and also to evaluate profitability of farmed forest in order to determine the feasibility of farm forestry. The investigation showed that (1) a large amount of firewood is consumed for food processing, (2) wood distribution structure is simple, with only carriers or a broker between producers and consumers, and (3) concerning profitability, an internal rate of return of 15 % or more is expected if a mean annual increment of more than 22 cubic m per hectare can be secured.
