Tolerance of Bidens pilosa L. and Parthenium hysterophorus L. to paraquat (Gramoxone) in Kenya coffee
1991
Njoroge, J.M.
Paraquat which is marketed in Kenya as gramoxone (20% ml) is the most widely used herbicide against weeds in Kenya coffee. However from middle 1980's there were reports of its irregular weed control performance. Field investigations on Bidens pilosa (Black jack) and Parthenium hysterophorus tolerance to paraquat were carried out at Ruiru between 1987-90. The four rates, 1, 2, 3 and 4 l/ha of gramoxone used failed to control the two annual weeds irrespective of the stage of growth. It is concluded that different herbicides should be used frequently in order to avert such tolerance occurrences of weeds to particular herbicides
