Better coffee farming: low coffee prices in Kenya; a misnomer?
1993
A five year period (1987/88 to 1991/92) study on the coffee production and sales showed an increase of coffee prices since 1990/91 which had led to 2.3% increase in production by the estate sector. Small-holder coffee growers showed 62% decline in coffee production since 1987/88 with wide variations between districts and productivity per unit area between farmers. Introduction of new policy changes such as out-of-pool payment system, trading of coffee in dollars at Nairobi auction, foreign exchange retention accounts at 50% level, abolition of presumptive income tax and changes in requirement of import license are expected to encourage the farmers to increase coffee production and benefit from increased coffee prices
