This working paper highlights the results of an intercropping trial conducted by the research component of Bura Fuelwood Project. Cover crops such as cowpeas, green grams, lablab beans, may improve the survival of seedlings if interplanted with tree seedlings. The advantages include effective erosion control and soil protection, particularly in arid areas where wind erosion caused in dry and loose soils are is common. The main objective of the study was therefore, to study the effect of three covercrops on the establishment of Prosopis juliflora and Azadirachta indica. The secondary objective of the study was to assess the potential of agroforestry in the irrigated forestry fields.
