Factors determining fertilizer adoption of the peasant farm sector in Northern Ethiopia, Tigray region

In this paper, the researcher has investigated the determinants of the likelihood offertilizer adoption and the intensity of fertilizer use in Tigray region, Ethiopia. A paneldata set which consists of a sample of 307 households and 614 observations was used inthe analysis. The random effect Panel probit and panel tobit models were employed toexamine factors that determine the probability of fertilizer adoption and the intensity offertilizer use, respectively. The likelihood of fertilizer adoption were mostly explainedby the head of the household’s education status, labor endowment, farm size, thenumber of plots that the farmer used, the distance to plots from homesteads, oxenownership and the distance to market from residence. On the other hand, the intensity ofthe input use were largely explained by the household head’s education status, farmsize, manure use, the number of plots the farmer used, the distance to plots fromhomesteads, and oxen ownership. Geographical locations of households which weresupposed to grip geographic, economic, social, political and other related factorsdifferences also significantly affected both the likelihood of adoption and the intensityof the input use. While time had its own significant impact in determining the intensityof the input use, it had less effect on the likelihood of fertilizer adoption in the region.
