Sammenheng mellom psykososiale arbeidsmiljøfaktorer og ulike helseplager hos innvandrere : en tverrsnittsstudie basert på data fra «Levekårsundersøkelsen blant personer med innvandrer bakgrunn 2016»

English. Background: Immigrants are often employed in occupations with low educational requirements compared to the rest of the population. Such occupations are often characterized by worse psychosocial factors at work such as low control over work tasks and monotonous work. It indicates that immigrants have a higher incidence of psychological distress, headaches and back- and neck problems compared to the rest of the population. Psychosocial factors at work have been related to these health issues. However, there is less knowledge about the relation between psychosocial factors at work and health in the employed immigrant population in Norway. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the association between various psychosocial factors at work and psychological distress, headaches and back and neck problems in immigrants in Norway. Method: The data material used in this study is based on cross-sectional data from the “Living Conditions Survey among immigrant backgrounds 2016” conducted by Statistics Norway. Quantitative data were obtained in interviews where the participants were asked about health conditions, working environment, language skills and other socio-demographic conditions. Only employed participants between the ages of 20 and 67 were included in this study (n = 2402). Logistic regression was used to investigate associations between psychosocial factors at work and psychological distress (Hopkins Symptom Checklist-5), headaches and back and neck problems. Results: Low decision authority, discrimination at work in the last 12 months and rarely or never getting the opportunity to decide when to take breaks were significantly related to higher degree of psychological distress, headaches and back and neck problems. People with low skill discretion had higher odds for reporting both psychological distress and back and neck pain while more repeated work tasks was positively related to a higher degree of psychological distress only. Working alone without any work colleagues was not significantly associated with any of the health issues. Conclusion: Several psychosocial factors at work are associated with psychological distress, headaches and back and neck problems in immigrants in Norway. This study indicates that health problems in the employed immigrant population may be prevented by implementing measures to improve the psychosocial factors at work, especially in occupational groups where a large proportion of immigrants are employed.

Bakgrunn: Innvandrere jobber oftere i yrker med lave krav til utdanning sammenliknet med den øvrige befolkningen. Slike yrker er ofte preget av dårligere psykososiale arbeidsmiljøfaktorer som lav kontroll over arbeidsoppgaver og monotont arbeid. Det tyder samtidig på at innvandrere har høyere forekomst av psykiske helseplager, hodepine og rygg- og nakkeplager sammenliknet med den øvrige befolkningen. Det er funnet sammenhenger mellom flere psykososiale arbeidsmiljøfaktorer og disse helseplagene. Dog foreligger det mindre kunnskap om betydningen av psykososialt arbeidsmiljø for innvandrernes helse i Norge. Formål: I denne oppgaven undersøkes sammenhengen mellom ulike psykososiale arbeidsmiljøfaktorer og psykiske helseplager, hodepine og rygg- og nakkeplager hos innvandrere i Norge. Metode: Datamaterialet benyttet i denne oppgaven er basert på tverrsnittsdata og er hentet fra «Levekårsundersøkelsen blant personer med innvandrerbakgrunn 2016» utført av Statistisk Sentralbyrå. Kvantitative data ble innhentet ved intervju der deltakerne ble spurt om blant annet helseforhold, arbeidsmiljø, språk og andre sosiodemografiske forhold. Kun sysselsatte deltakere mellom 20 og 67 år ble inkludert i denne oppgaven (n = 2402). Det ble benyttet logistisk regresjon for å undersøke sammenhenger mellom ulike psykososiale arbeidsmiljøfaktorer og psykiske plager (Hopkins Symptom Checklist-5), hodepine og rygg- og nakkeplager. Resultater: Dårlige muligheter til å påvirke beslutninger som er viktig for sitt arbeid, opplevd forskjellsbehandling på jobb siste 12 måneder og sjelden/aldri mulighet til å bestemme når man skal ta pauser fra arbeidet viste en positiv sammenheng med alle helseplagene. Dårlige muligheter til å benytte ferdigheter i jobben ga høyere odds for både psykiske helseplager og rygg- og nakkeplager, mens det å ha gjentatte arbeidsoppgaver mesteparten av dagen viste en positiv sammenheng med kun psykiske helseplager. Det å jobbe alene uten kollegaer i nærheten viste ingen sammenheng med noen av helseplagene. Konklusjon: Flere psykososiale arbeidsmiljøfaktorer har en sammenheng med psykiske helseplager, hodepine og rygg- og nakkeplager hos innvandrere i Norge. Målrettede tiltak for å bedre det psykososiale arbeidsmiljøet, spesielt i yrkesgrupper hvor en stor andel innvandrere jobber i, kan muligens bidra til å forebygge helseplager hos denne gruppen.
