Studies on pig raising system in Eastern Terai Region (ETR)

A surveys was conducted to understand the pig raising system in ETR. Six farmers from differnt 5 VDC of each district were selected and interviewed. The purpose of survey was to aquaint knowledge about production and management system of pig husbandry. All tegether 90 farmers were interviewed through questionnaire filling. 80 percent farmers were found raising local pigs while 15 percent and 5 percent were found crossbred and improved breed respectively. Maximum number of pig was found in 14 and minimum was 3 heads. 75 percent poor, 20 percent medium and 5 percent rich farmers were involved in pig raising. 50 percent farmers were recorded providing home made brewery residues. Similarly 35 percent farmers were feeding their pigs kitchen waste, green vegetable, pumpkin, karkalo and other weeds. However, 15 percent were obtained only cereal by products including rice bran, maize bran, wheat bran and broken cereal grains. The feeding was recorded 2-3 times daily. Most of the house were observed stone and wood flooring with tiles and thatched roof. Feeding trough were made locally either wood or cement. Natural service were recorded at the age of 9 to 10 month in first time which furrowed 8-10 pig-lets per farrowing. The mortality was obtained 20-25 percent before weaning.
