Nsoatreman Rural Bank - Ghana : case study of a microfinance scheme

As part of the research initiative examining best practices in micro-finance institutional development in African countries, this report summarizes the significant experience of the Nsoatreman Rural Bank (NRB) - Ghana in providing micro-finance services. The report reviews NRB's background, established in 1984 to meet both financial inter-mediation, and poverty alleviation within the Brong Ahafo region in Ghana, it serves members of the communities, providing lending, savings, and other banking services, including non-financial services, such as supply of agricultural inputs to farmers, and farm extension services, through a subsidiary organization. The financial and technical support provided by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the International Development Association (IDA), fostered accessibility to NRB services, which between 1995-1998, grew at an average of fifty five percent per annum, and, the ratio of operating income, totaled increases estimated at one hundred and twenty three percent of operating expenses, demonstrating significant outreach. Its flexible operations, and innovative lending practices, ensured collaborative arrangements with non-governmental organizations, which included loan monitoring, and recovery roles, ensuring higher loan repayment rates.
