The old and new poor in Russia : trends in poverty
Braithwaite, Jeanine
The transition to the market did noit create poverty in Russia, but it greatly exacerbated the problem. Poverty became widespread in 1992 and especially in 1993, widening from not more than 10-11 percent of the population in the 1980s to nearly 30 percent in October 1993. Poverty, always associated with family size, bcame increasingly concentrated in families with children, as well as in families with an unemployed or handicapped person, during 1993. Certain regions of Russia were disproportionately affected by poverty, reflecting increasing disparities in wage remuneration. Poverty was strongly associated with single parent status, and the majority of such households were female-headed.
