Russian Federation - Biodiversity Conservation Project

The main objective of the Biodiversity Conservation Project is to assist the Russian Federation maintain optimum levels of biodiversity in accordance with the principles of economic and environmentally sound sustainable development. The project will assist in ensuring the enhanced protection of biodiversity, within and outside protected areas, in conformance with the government's obligations under the Convention of Biological Diversity. The project will include the following three components: 1) strategic overview consisting of: (a) national and regional biodiversity strategies; (b) biodiversity policy support; and (c) biomonitoring information system; 2) strengthening of protected area systems including: (a) institutional support; (b) operations and planning; (c) public support and education programs; (d) ecosystem protection; and (e) training; and 3) Lake Baikal regional program comprising: (a) inter-regional activities; (b) regional activities; and (c) local biodiversity activities.
